People On the Go of Maryland and Self Advocacy Leadership
People on the Go of Maryland is a statewide self advocacy group supported The Arc of Maryland. People On the Go of Maryland is a group of self-advocates who believe all people with challenges should be included in school, work, and independent living. Our 60 active members come from 13 local self-advocacy groups around the state. Individual membership is free and open to anyone with a disability.
Meetings are held four times a year in different meeting sites to discuss current issues and work on increasing employment opportunities, improving transportation, eliminating discrimination against people with disabilities, training direct care staff, and protecting the rights of people with disabilities.
Members are very active politically. All members believe that everyone has the right to live in the community, and have testified to close institutions, increase funding for staff, and protect the personal needs allowance for persons with developmental disabilities. The group has placed an intern at the Maryland General Assembly for three years and employs a member to work during the legislative session as their representative.
People On the Go of Maryland has joined forces with Maryland ADAPT to form the Cross Disability Rights Coalition (CDRC). CDRC is working hard to shift funding from institutions and nursing facilities to community supports for people with disabilities.
